Brent is a director of sales and account management in Manulife Financial's Toronto Group Benefits office. Brent leads a team of benefits professionals that partners with clients and advisors to align with their strategic direction and deliver total employee benefit solutions. Prior to joining Manulife six years ago, Brent worked as a benefit consultant at two national consulting firms for 11 years in Toronto, Halifax and London. top

 

Marc Avaria

As vice-president, group life and disability operations, Marc leads the national group life and disability organization at Manulife Financial. The organization includes 12 regional disability management centres that service customers across Canada. Marc’s background includes leadership roles in group life and health operations, group life and health marketing, group life and disability claims management, and human resources. Marc graduated from Queen’s University in 2002 with an MBA. top

 

Denise Balch

As president and founder of Connex Health, Denise oversees the development and delivery of workplace health assessment, programming and measurement solutions for employers. She has an extensive background in workplace health and benefits, and is known as a leader and innovator in her chosen field. She has authored numerous articles on workplace health, which have appeared in both Canadian and U.S. publications. She is also the creator of several ongoing educational programs and conferences in benefits and workplace health and is an active participant of the Health Policy Committee at the Burlington Chamber of Commerce. Denise is one of a small number of Certified Excellence Professionals (Healthy Workplace) with the National Quality Institute. top

 

Christine Ball

Christine is the Regional Municipality of Durham's director of employee services, human resources. She is responsible for the leadership and development of all aspects of employee services, including cost management. Her current portfolio includes pension and group insurance, absence management, WSIB, EAP and wellness initiatives for over 3,000 union and non-union staff. Christine is also president of the Ontario Municipal Human Resources Association (OMHRA), an organization that represents 142 municipalities and 267 human resources practitioners across Ontario. OMHRA provides its members with a variety of professional learning opportunities, and keeps them updated on collective bargaining, health and welfare benefits, and employment-related legislation issues. top

 

Dianne Balon

With over 20 years’ experience in the healthcare industry, Dianne has been with Alberta Blue Cross for over 15 years. She is currently the senior manager of Pharmacy & Clinical Drug Services. Dianne's responsibilities include the two divisions that oversee real-time drug claims adjudication, administration of the Alberta Blue Cross Pharmacy Agreement, pharmacy audits, clinical drug services such as the Special Authorization program, and drug plan management. Dianne's role encompasses both the Alberta Government Sponsored Drug Programs as well as the Private Group Plan Drug Programs. top

 

Julian Barling

Julian is associate dean of graduate programs and Research in the School of Business at Queen's University. He currently serves as the editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology. He holds a Queen's Research Chair, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. top

 

Sarah Beech

Sarah is the Canadian benefits practice leader for Hewitt Associates, working out of the firm's Toronto office. Sarah has more than 19 years experience in the benefits industry. Prior to joining Hewitt, she supervised the underwriting department of a major Canadian insurance company. She made the switch to consulting 15 years ago when she came to Hewitt. Sarah was named to the Aventis Healthcare Survey Advisory Board in 2004 and is one of Hewitt Canada's foremost spokespeople and authors on the topics of health care and flexible benefits. She has a bachelor of arts degree from McGill University.

Don Bisch

Don is editor of Benefit Canada and provides overall editorial direction on Benefits CanadaCanadian Healthcare Manager and Gestion Santé magazines. Don joined the Rogers Publishing Healthcare and Financial Services Group in April 2000 and has led the editorial team at Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine for the past four years. He holds a master’s of journalism degree from Carleton University and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Waterloo. top

 

Paul Boundy

Paul is regional vice-president, business development, for Sun Life Financial Group Benefits' Western region. He leads his management team in developing strategies that ensure our customers' needs are met while fostering relationships with customers in the Western region. Paul has built an extraordinarily successful career over the past 26 years and is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Wendy Bott

Wendy is the manager of employee benefits at TD Bank Financial Group.  She is responsible for the company's global benefits programs.  Her career in benefits began over 15 years ago with another major financial institution. She is a graduate of Queen's University. top

 

Charles Bruce

Chuck is the Chief Executive Officer of the Nova Scotia Public Service Long Term Disability Plan. This organization provides long-term disability benefits to approximately 12,500 employees of the Province of Nova Scotia and a number of other public sector agencies.  Chuck has been active in the financial services community for greater than 15 years. Prior to assuming his current role, Chuck was the Managing Director of one of Canada’s leading banks responsible for its investment and trust operations throughout Atlantic Canada.  He holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Personal Financial Planner professional designations and is a member of the Financial Planning Standards Council of Canada. He has completed numerous industry programs including the Advanced Trustee Management Standards (ATMS) program. He is currently enrolled in the Chartered Directors Program (C.Dir) offered by McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada and is pursuing his MBA at Dalhousie University. top

 

Ed Buffett

Ed is the president and CEO of Buffett Taylor & Associates Ltd., a firm specializing in employee benefits, worksite wellness and human resource consulting. Ed is a former recipient of the Who’s Who in Healthcare Award sponsored by Canadian Healthcare Manager.  This award recognized Ed’s pioneering work in the area of employee health promotion.  He is co-author of Health Promotion – A Sourcebook for Canadian Business and author of the Buffett Taylor National Wellness Survey Report. Ed is the current chair of the Board of Governors, McMaster University.  He is a former chair of the board of the Whitby General Hospital, former vice-chair of the Whitby General Hospital Foundation, former chair of the Durham Community Foundation and former chair of the Ajax Whitby Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  Ed was a member of the Federal Government’s Action Research Roundtable on Workplace Wellbeing and from 1999 through 2001, he was a Board member of HealNet, a federally established network of centres of excellence for research in the areas of health, social and applied sciences.  top

 

Andrew Cameron

Andrew is manager, global benefit programs at Air Canada, where he is responsible for the development and provision of international benefit programs, including disability, dental, and supplemental health, for approximately 29,000 active employees and 16,000 retirees.  Andrew has his BA in computer sciences and has been working in various human resource roles for the past 18 years. top

Andrew Chung

Andrew joined Emergis Inc. in March 2004 as the director of formulary management. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing all activities related to formulary management, as well as stakeholder relations for formulary, pricing, and reimbursement issues. Along with experience in retail pharmacy operations and specialty drug distribution channels, Andrew has also held numerous roles within the Ontario Ministry of Health (Drug Programs Branch). He received his undergraduate pharmacy degree from the University of Toronto and continues to maintain an active practice in community pharmacy. Martin Chung

Martin is senior manager of patient access and health policy for Pfizer Canada Inc. A graduate of the faculty of pharmacy at the University of Toronto he has over 10 years experience in various capacities in hospital, community practice, pharmacy management and the pharmaceutical industry. During this time and now with Pfizer Canada, Martin continues to be involved in sharing the value of health management with key health stakeholders. Dan Clow
Dr.
Clow oversees the work of GlaxoSmithKline in the private payer community across Canada. He has held several roles as both an employee of and consultant to the pharmaceutical industry in Canada over the past 15 years. Dr. Clow graduated from Queen’s University in 1988 with a PhD in pharmacology and subsequently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, prior to returning to Canada to join the pharmaceutical industry. top

 

Mark Collison

Mark is currently the BC external affairs manager for AstraZeneca Canada. In this position he is responsible for AstraZeneca drug reimbursement, health policy and stakeholder relations for the province. Mark has an interest in disease state management and public education programs and has successfully implemented recent partnership initiatives with the Ministry of Health, Health Regions and other stakeholders in this regard. David Czuczman

David has been with Buffett Taylor over the past 10 years where he has held progressively more senior roles in servicing the firm's largest public and private sector clients. Currently he is principal and specializes in benefit cost management. His role includes the integration of proactive employee worksite health initiatives into a customized solution toolkit for employers. David has 17 years of experience in the group insurance industry. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1988 with a BSc, majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. Larry Findlay
Larry is the administrator for the Municipal Employees Benefit Association of Calgary (MEBAC), a human resources consultant for the City of Calgary and a regional board member for the Canadian Pension & Benefit Institute (CPBI). He is also an IFEBP member. MEBAC represents approximately 11,000 civic employees and provides benefits for 27,000 lives. Larry holds a B.Comm from the University of Calgary, along with CHRP, CEB, and ATMS designations.  He sits on a number of advisory boards within the industry and volunteers for various associations and community organizations. Larry has been in the industry for 33 years and has served as a presenter and moderator at numerous industry events. top

Catherine Fitzsimon

Catherine is director of patient access at Pfizer Canada. Based in Kirkland, Quebec, her group is responsible for ensuring patients have access to Pfizer products in both the public and private sectors. The group also ensures that policy decisions support the positive role of pharmaceuticals in the Canadian healthcare environment. Prior to joining Pfizer, Catherine was a consultant in pharmacoeconomics at Quintiles Canada. She is a graduate of McGill University in physiology and economics. top

 

Paul Foley
As director private health plans for Shoppers Drug Mart, Paul works with all private third-party and federal programs stakeholders on pharmacy related reimbursement, operational and health policy issues and opportunities. Prior to joining Shoppers Drug Mart in 2003, Paul worked in the pharmaceutical industry in the area of government and third party relations, health policy, market access and reimbursement. top

 

William Gibson

Bill is currently the director of human resources for the Toronto Police Service. He has over 28 years of experience in policing, 18 of which have been in the human resources field.  In this capacity, he is responsible for the services’ labour relations, employment, compensation and benefits and occupational health & safety. He plays a critical role in the bargaining negotiations for the services’ collective agreements. Bill is currently a member of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and former chair of the Human Resources Committee of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. top

 

Jane Haberbusch

As director, human resources for Enbridge Gas Distribution based out of Toronto, Jane has overall responsibility for all human resources policies, programs and initiatives. Reporting to the president, she is part of the executive management team and also sits on the bargaining team that negotiates collective agreements with their union. top

 

Mark Haley

Since October 2000, Mark has held the position of assistant vice-president, human resources services at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has executive responsibility for a team of 40 staff who deliver the full spectrum of HR services, including employee relations services, health benefits services, compensation, recruitment, occupational health and safety as well as supporting the delivery of all HR practices and policies. Prior to joining McMaster, Mark held progressively responsible positions in human resources management in Ontario and Alberta. An exceptionally strong HR professional, Mark has demonstrated superior leadership in change management, collective bargaining and employee relations as well as the design and delivery of healthcare benefits and compensation structures. Thomas Holloway

Thomas is president of Equitus Consulting where he acts to effect the transfer of knowledge between the third-party payers and the pharmaceutical companies. Educated at Strathclyde University in Scotland, Thomas learned his craft as a marketer with Colgate-Palmolive in Europe and in North, Central and South America. Later at London Life he learned the business of group insurance and through his ownership of Pharmex Direct and ReVue Drug Evaluation Group Inc. has come to understand the co-relation between the employer, the insurer and the employee. top

 

Fred Holmes

After a 32-year career in the employee benefit consulting industry, Fred joined Emergis Inc. in January 2005 to start up their PBM Centre of Excellence. Fred has been a frequent conference chair, speaker and author and has been quoted in many publications. Most recently he was on the Ontario Drug Strategy Steering Committee. top

Dave is director of workplace health for the Fraser Health Authority which has over 22,000 employees and is the largest integrated health authority in Canada, serving over half of BC's population. Kim is the managing editor of Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine, the organizers of the Healthy Outcomes Summit. Ron Loucks

Ron is the founder and CEO of NexgenRx, a managed healthcare organization, directly serving the drug, dental and extended health benefits needs of Canadian employers, through the leading employee benefits consulting and brokerage firms in Canada. Ron has spent over 20 years in the Canadian group benefits industry. He was chief operating officer of Assure Health until it was acquired by BCE Emergis. At that time, he was named executive vice-president, North America and was responsible for the Canadian eHealth Division. He left Emergis in February 2002 to start his own managed care consulting company. Ron has a degree in Business Administration from Bishop’s University and has authored many articles on healthcare reform, cost containment and electronic health claims processing. He has also been a frequent speaker at a wide variety of international health industry conferences. He is a member of the board of governors of McMaster University, and is also a director of the Think First Foundation of Canada. He is the former president of the Alumni Association of Lower Canada College, as well as the Board of the Montreal YMCA Foundation. top

 

Graham Lowe
Graham is president of The Graham Lowe Group Inc., a workplace consulting and research firm. Since receiving his doctorate in sociology from the University of Toronto in 1979, he has been a professor at the University of Alberta, as well as a visiting professor, lecturer and researcher at other universities in Canada, Europe and Asia. His extensive research and publications examine the quality of work, healthy workplaces, human resource development, organizational change and performance, employment trends and the future of work, employment policy, school-work transitions, and unions. He is a research associate at Canadian Policy Research Networks (CPRN), a national social policy think-tank. During 1999-2001, he served as the Director of CPRN’s Work Network. His team created Canada’s only website that offers a comprehensive range of quality of work indicators (www.jobquality.ca), and was awarded the Policy Research Initiative’s 2001 Knowledge Broker of the Year Award for a multi-sponsor project on employment relationships. Carolyn MacDonald
Carolyn has worked for the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations (NSAHO) for six years as director of benefits. NSAHO provides, among other things, benefits to some 12,000 healthcare workers in
Nova Scotia. Prior to joining NSAHO, Carolyn spent 10 years at Mutual Life of Canada (now Clarica) in various roles, primarily with a marketing focus in group health and group pension benefits. Carolyn is currently on the Atlantic Council for Canadian Pension & Benefits and CEBS. top

Marilee Mark
Marilee is the vice-president of marketing services group benefits at Manulife Financial. She is responsible for the development of marketing strategies, communication and product solutions for employers of all sizes across Canada. She has a background in healthcare (occupational therapy), disability management and consulting. Marilee’s industry involvement includes the Group Insurance Pharmaceutical Committee, the advisory board of Canadian Healthcare Manager and the advisory board for the annual sanofi aventis Healthcare Survey. top

 

Ken Martin

Ken was appointed president and CEO of Pacific Blue Cross (PBC) in January 2003. He is also president and CEO and a member of the board of directors of British Columbia Life & Casualty Company. Prior to joining PBC, he was the U.S. practice leader for Mercer HR Consulting’s administration practice, a member of  the U.S. board of directors and a  worldwide partner. He has held several positions in the employee benefits consulting industry. Ken is a graduate and permanent member of the Honours Society of The Richard Ivey School of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario. top

 

Terry Martin
Terry is director, products and services, for Sun Life Financial Group Benefits. She brings more than 20 years experience in the benefits industry to her role. Providing strategic direction to the product managers, she is primarily responsible for product and service positioning. Terry works closely with business development developing innovative solutions to help plan sponsors better manage their benefit plans. An active participant in the Brogan Roundtable, she is also a member of the CLHIA Group Committee and sits on the steering committee for the Atlantic Health and Wellness Institute's four-year workplace wellness study in Nova Scotia. top

 

Joan McDonald

Joan is a human resources consultant at the University of Calgary. Joan's work is at the strategic level aligning benefits programs with the organization's human resources direction, and she has been instrumental in launching the university's health and wellbeing initiatives. Joan has a Certified Human Resource Professional designation, and is a member of the Human Resources Institute of Alberta and the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute. She is also a representative to the Alberta Employer Committee for Health Care. top

 

Joanne McKechnie
Joanne is a partner in the Graham Lowe Group Inc and CEO of the new
Great Place to Work Institute Canada. Joanne has worked extensively with governments, regional health authorities, hospitals, health professional organizations, Aboriginal associations, international and non-governmental organizations and taught research methods at the university level. Joanne has a BScN and MA (Sociology) from the University of Alberta and an MSc (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) from McGill University. top


Tim McQueen

Tim joined DCCI in September 1999, as a district manager in Saskatchewan. He has held positions of increasing responsibility and most recently was appointed to communications manager with DaimlerChrysler Canada in Calgary. He current duties involve the day-to-day activities of managing the DCCI press fleet in Western Canada and dealing with the automotive journalists from various newspapers, magazines and television productions across Western Canada. Geoffrey Mitchinson

Wendy Murkar

Wendy has been an employee of Green Shield Canada for 24 years in various capacities: manager of human resources, manager of strategic planning and director of claims administration. Prior to Green Shield, she worked for five years in the health benefits department of Chrysler Canada (now Daimler Chrysler) with responsibility for benefit plan administration and benefit utilization. Wendy also worked for several years as a nurse in both Canada and in the British Isles. Her last nursing assignment was in northern canada where she worked as an outpost nurse practitioner for two years. top

 

Dr. Larry Myette

Dr. Myette has been the director of employee and workplace health and occupational medicine consultant at Healthcare Benefit Trust since 1999. He is a former command surgeon of the Canadian Navy and Regional Medical Officer with Health Canada. Dr. Myette holds degrees in pharmacy, medicine and public health and is certified as a specialist in occupational medicine. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC, co-chair of the Depression in the Workplace Collaborative, and special advisor for Occupational Medicine and Workplace Mental Health for the Global Business & Economic Roundtable for Mental Health & Addictions. top

Bob Nicholas

Bob has been in the benefits business 30 years. Prior to joining Manulife Financial, as a result of the acquisition of John Hancock by MFC, Bob was senior vice-president, group operations at Maritime Life. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with a BA and a BEd. top

 

Morris Nord

Morris is the senior vice-president, marketing and client development with Pacific Blue Cross. Prior to relocating to Vancouver in 2004, Morris held senior marketing and operations positions in Calgary and Toronto in the group insurance industry. Micheline Piquette-Miller

Dr.Piquette-Miller, an associate professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto received a BSc in pharmacy and a PhD in pharmacokinetics at the University of Alberta and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biopharmaceutics and molecular pharmacology at the University of California in San Francisco in 1996. Dr. Piquette-Miller has been the recipient of numerous research awards and honours for her research in the area of multidrug resistance, including the prestigious national Rx&D Health Research Foundation Research Career Award, the Pfiasky Young Investigator Award, the University of Alberta Horizon Award as well as the Award of Excellence in Pharmaceutical Research from the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology. She has served on the board of directors of the American Society of  Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and chairs the Pharmacogenetics and Molecular Pharmacology section as well as serving on the Executive Boards of the Canadian Societies of Clinical Pharmacology (CSCP) and the Canadian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CSPS). Her research focuses on examining methods to suppress multidrug resistance in tumor cells, a leading cause of anti-cancer drug failure and death in cancer. top

 

Anne Prybyla

Anne is director of benefits policy for Canada Post. She has 23 years experience in human resources including both policy work, internal and external change management and consulting experience. Previously she worked for two years working as a human resources consultant with Consulting and Audit Canada (CAC) - PWGSC, Federal Government - specializing in change management. Prior to CAC, Anne was with Nortel Networks for 16 years holding many positions including benefits and pension administration. top

 

Don Renaud
Don is a pharmacist and president of SOLUTIONS in Health Inc. He has degrees from Wayne State University and the University of Windsor. His career has taken him from Tacoma General Hospital in Seattle to pharmacies in Windsor, Ontario. Don is a member of the Canadian Pharmacists’ Association, the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association and a member of the  Pharmacy Economic Committee, the Pharmacy Services Committee and the Essex County Pharmacists’ Association. top

 

Kaylynn Schroeder

As executive vice-president and head of Aon's Central/Western Region, Kaylynn is responsible for overall client service optimization and business development across the region. In addition, to her management responsibilities, she is accountable to mobilize teams of professionals to deliver integrated services to clients in fulfillment of our client relationship model. Kaylynn joined the company in 1985 and has held a number of roles within the company. She achieved her FLMI designation from the Life Office Management Institute in 1991, and in 1993, attained her CEBS designation from the International Foundation of Employee Benefits. top

 

Dr. Steven Semelman

Dr. Semelman is vice-president of health management operations at ESI Canada. His responsibilities include operational activities for drug, dental and other health services. He is also an advisor to various Rx&D pharmaceutical companies on pharmaco-economics, clinical trials, and health management issues. Steven holds an appointment at the University of Toronto, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and instructs pharmacy students at the university in health management issues. In addition, Dr. Semelman is a co-ordinator for the doctor of pharmacy and industrial pharmacy residency programs at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. He has received awards for and published numerous articles on clinical pharmacy and managed care issues. Steven is one of the 2003 recipients of the Who’s Who in Canadian Healthcare Awards. He holds bachelor’s degrees in arts and sciences and pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island, a doctor of pharmacy from the University of Minnesota and a certificate in health services administration from the University of Ottawa. top

 

Georgia Siabanis

Georgia is project manager at Royal Bank of Canada where she manages programs in: wellness/prevention and outcomes/disability. She has been with RBC for nine years and her past experience includes human resource consulting, HRIS system and benefit plan management. top

Allan Smofsky
Allan is a workplace health strategist and consultant with Affinitas Inc. on workplace health and employee benefits issues. A fluently bilingual native of Montreal, Allan has dedicated his career to improving health in the workplace. He possesses a wide range of related experience, having held senior-level positions in the areas of employee benefits/human resources consulting, workplace health promotion/disability prevention, and pharmaceuticals. Allan attended Concordia University in Montreal, where he studied business administration. He is an active member of numerous workplace health-related organizations and, in addition, is currently chair of both the Canadian Healthy Workplace Council and the Incentives Working Group. Allan is a frequent speaker and writer on workplace health and employee benefits issues. top

Ken Todd

Ken is director of corporate services for the City of St. Catharines, Ontario, where he is responsible for all human resource functions, corporate technology and corporate administration. He has 25 years’ experience in the human resource field with emphasis on collective bargaining and labour relations. Ken holds an honours BA from Wilfrid Lauier University and a master’s degree from Queen’s University.

 

Lila Walker

Lila is the director of compensation and human resources administration in the human resources division of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). The LCBO is a Crown Corporation of the Ontario government which distributes and sells beverage alcohol in the province. She is responsible for total compensation, including group insurance benefit plans and other employee programs for approximately 7,000 LCBO employees, including casual, part-time employees. In addition to the last 11 years in the public sector, Lila also has over 20 years' experience as a human resources professional in manufacturing and financial services sectors. top

Mia is a national account manager for Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine as well as its sister publications Benefits
Canada and the Canadian Investment Review. Her responsibilities include sales management, advertising and sponsorship programs, research and custom projects and the development and co-ordination of marketing initiatives for clients. Mia holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Alberta. top
